The principle component of an Air Cooled heat Exchangers is the tube bundle, of which there may be many, normally comprising finned tubes terminating in header boxes.It also known as Fin Fan heat exchangers are typically used in applications where water is not available or the desired process outlet temperature can be achieved given the maximum ambient temperatures. Also, air cooled equipment can be a more simple solution against water cooled because in water cooled systems there is also a need for more pumps, piping, central chiller or cooling towers increasing the operating cost and maintenance of the system.Air Cooled Heat Exchangers are used in a wide variety of applications. Common air to liquid applications include but are not limited to lube oil coolers, water and glycol coolers, jacket water coolers, engine radiators, hydraulic oil coolers (both stationary and mobile), and closed loop cooling systems. An Air Cooled Heat Exchangers is a large piece of equipment compared to other types of heat exchangers, and requires free space around it for the cooling air flow. In refineries and chemical plants Air Cooled Heat Exchangers are usually mounted over a piperack, saving plot space at grade and ensuring free airflow. A further advantage of this elevated mounting is shorter pipe runs for column overheads, saving both cost and pressure drop. In some cases an ACHE may be mounted on top of a column to keep pressure loss to an absolute minimum, but this can make maintenance more difficult.

An Air Cooled Heat Exchangers installation includes the finned tube heat exchanger header, steel support structure, fan drive equipment, including axial fans, V-belt drivers, bearing shafts and electric motors.
